Seldes put Katharine through Dalton and Bennington College on her own. She never left. She was also regularly honored. She won a Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2010. Her beloved standing in the theatre was bolstered by her long tenure — from 1969 to 1992 — on the drama faculty of Juilliard School.
In many way, Ms. Seldes seemed like a woman out of her time, a poised personage more at home in the 1930s, or even the 19th century.
Her uncle was journalist George Seldes. Career Trained for the stage, Seldes made her Broadway theatre debut in 1948 in a production of Medea. She went on to an illustrious career in which she earned five Tony Award nominations, winning her first time out in 1967 for A Delicate Balance. In addition to performing in live theatre, Seldes began acting in television in 1952 in a Hallmark Hall of Fame production that marked the first of many guest star roles.
She and her siblings studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse. In 1953 Seldes married the actor Julian Claman, with whom she had one daughter, Katharine, before the couple divorced in 1961. In 1990, she married writer and director Garson Kanin.
