In his own zone, he is efficient at breaking up play with an active stick. Projected as a second-line centre, Pettersson could end up being one of the best middle-men in the league very soon. His incredible mobility combined with some of the best hands and shot in the league makes him a threat from anywhere on the ice. Whereas Makar usually creates offence rushing full-speed at defenders, Heiskanen is much more subtle. He scans the zone from the point and makes little feints before finding his target. He is every bit as good a skater as Makar and his zone entry and exit numbers are also elite. Heiskanen is significantly better defensively, playing 25-plus minutes in both of his playoff campaigns. He is incredibly efficient at stunting offense with his body and stick.
The Stars will be content having picked Heiskanen third. He is a terrific playmaker — he ranked 10th in assists-per-60 last season — and his tireless work ethic makes him difficult to play against. He never stops competing, winning pucks and generating chances for his teammates. He has shown some flair this season, too. Passing by Robert Thomas has been so nice this season pic. He has an elusive release and picks corners with ease. He should feast on weak matchups as a second-line center this year. In his final year of junior, he carried the Guelph Storm to the Memorial Cup with 42 points in 24 playoff games.
In the NHL, he has continued to produce at an impressive rate and has shown he can run a powerplay. Some have given up on him, but if he remains healthy he can still reach his potential. His frame means he can win pick battles and maintain possession, and his quick hands and creativity mean he can create chances.

Strong and skilled with the puck, Kostin can create openings with his stickhandling and 1-on-1 abilities, but must work on his skating and consistency. Eeli Tolvanen Eeli Tolvanen also watched his stock soften as the season progressed after beginning as a top 10 pick 8th. Tolvanen possesses sharp offensive instincts and a lethal shot, yet there are concerns about how his slight frame and dimensional game will translate to higher levels. No player fell further in the rankings this season than towering Russian winger Nikita Popugaev. The Moscow native fired 19 goals in his first 25 games with Moose Jaw, however his play tailed off in December and he was dealt a month later to Prince George where he continued to sputter. Popugaev brings great size at 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds as well as a strong shooting arsenal. His skating needs to come along though, particularly his footwork and overall agility. But the bigger concern is how badly he wants it - as his work ethic and defensive play regressed to alarming levels over the second half. His smooth skating, subtle skills, and innate feel for the game were on full display throughout. Vaakanainen could turn out to be one of the best players from this draft. Expect the Finns to be high profile at this draft - as they could place up to seven players in the opening round plus another half dozen in the second.

As a 16-year-old rookie, he took on heavy responsibility, playing in all situations. He also scored 60 points in 62 games this past season. Tippett is extremely dangerous off the rush. He has excellent speed and acceleration. His ability to change speeds allows him to take defenders wide and drive to the front of the net, where he has the soft hands to finish in tight. If defenders back off to respect his speed, he can use his excellent wrist shot or snap shot and beat goalies with a quick release. Tippett could stand to work on his play making skills. He can stand to slow things down and hold on to the puck just a little longer before rushing a play. Tippett had 15 goals and 20 points for Mississauga last season. A strong performance, seven points in four games, would lead to him being invited to join the US NTDP late in the season. He scored a point per game. He had another impressive tournament, with nine points in seven games. He is committed to the University of Minnesota in 2017. Mittelstadt has excellent puck handling ability. He can beat defencemen one-on-one with a number of moves, and has the soft hands to stick handle in a phone both. He combines this with excellent speed, and the ability to make cuts on a dime. Mittlestadt is an excellent play maker who creates passing lanes with his quick puck movement. He also has a good shot. He put up nine goals and 10 points in just five games for Finland. Tolvanen is a pure sniper who scores goals in a variety of different ways. He reads the play extremely well, and uses a quick first step and excellent accleration to allude defenders and get himself open to fire a shot on goal. Tolvanen has an outstanding one-timer, with great power and accuracy. He also has a lightning quick release on his wrist shot. Tolvanen has the soft hands to make quick moves and beat defenders with his stick handling ability. He can bury rebounds and has the hand-eye coordination to get deflections in front of the net as well. He also has plenty of experience playing for the National team at the Ivan Hlinka tournament, the U18, and the U17 levels. Hischier is a playmaker, with outstanding vision and passing ability. He has very good hockey sense, and anticipates his teammates movements in the offensive zone. Hischier has a very quick first step, excellent acceleration and agility, as well as great edgework.

This year was no different with Noah Cates a raw Joe Pavelski type , big goalie Kirill Ustimenko and that kid who went second overall who might be pretty decent… All jokes aside, Hextall and his staff get lots of different skill sets and positional needs every draft, which puts them in a great spot for the future. Another notable dropper was Matthew Strome, who had to wait until the fourth round before Philly snapped up the big, smart scorer. Everyone knows that Strome and to a lesser extent Vilardi needs to iron out his footwork, but he was generally seen as a second-rounder. But yet again, it feels like the team only tried to hit singles instead of taking a home run cut or two. For the second time in three years, Washington only made four selections.
